Language is important to personal recovery. Words are the conceptual building blocks of recovery.
The ability of recovering people to coin or select words that accurately
and respectfully portray their experiences and aspirations is a crucial
dimension of the personal recovery experience. Words have long been
used to objectify and demonize people experiencing mental illnesses
and addictions. In recovery, alternative words and metaphors become
instruments of personal and collective liberation. Crafting recovery
language is about personal and social change, not political correctness.
