The Department of Behavioral Health/Mental Retardation Services

Outreach and Engagement

Especially needed, and valuable, during the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages of change, these services are offered in community settings such as on the street or under bridges, in shelters or soup kitchens, in prospective clients' homes, or in any other settings in which people with behavioral health conditions who are not yet engaged in care can be found. Incorporating motivation-enhancing interventions, and addressing prospective clients' basic needs and expressed goals, these services aim to "jump start" or "prime" people for recovery who otherwise are in an active addiction or are unaware of having, or choose not to accept having, a disabling psychiatric disorder.
