Council Kenyatta Johnson - 2nd District

Almost 20 years ago, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson began his career as a community activist when he started the organization PeaceNotGuns – which is still a passion of his today. It was from there that he began his quest to serve his community and others throughout Philadelphia.

In November of 2011, he was elected to serve the Second Councilman District of Philadelphia, which includes South and Southwest Philadelphia. This is not the Councilman’s first foray into Philadelphia politics. He previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

While serving as the Representative of the 186th Legislative District, which includes parts of South and Southwest Philadelphia, he served as Deputy Whip, Vice Chairman of the House Children and Youth Committee, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on First Class Cities and Counties. In addition, he was a member of the House Human Services Committee and the House State Government Committee. While representing the 186th District, Johnson was the chief sponsor or co-sponsor of over 200 pieces of legislation.

The Councilman is the Chair of the Transportation and Public Utilities and the Legislative Oversights committees and will serve on the following: Streets and Services, Licenses and Inspections, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Commerce and Economic Development, Public Health and Human Services, Public Safety, Housing Neighborhood Development and The Homeless and Information Services.

Councilman Johnson is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Fels Center of Government, where he received a Masters Degree in Government Administration. In addition, he completed the Governing for Non Profit Excellence certificate program at the Harvard School of Business.

He is committed to improving education, affordable housing, business development, public safety, job training and access to employment for his constituents in the Second District.
