Learning how to pick a melon and how to eat it.

Goals:

  • To bring a connection between food choice (nutrition) and behavior (energy) to after school youth.
  • Hands on practice in healthy food preparation
  • Introduction of diverse fruits, vegetables and healthy protein sources
  • Bring "AND" thinking to food, students think of what they like AND what they do not and learn some ways to make healthy food taste great.

Participants:

  • Create their own "Mis en Plas" (the ingredients that make up a recipe).  They prepare the food using their own utensils and ingredients.
  • Taste the individual ingredients and see how the parts make up the whole.
  • Get a copy of the recipe that they created by tasting and correcting the recipe.
  • Have a meal together that they created and share with others in their community.

SAFE NIGHT
One night,28 youths, 5 teens and 10 adults participated in a fun, interactive experience exploring Conflict Resolution Theatre skills and learning how to prepare healthy whole foods while sharing a meal.

Group members learned and practiced the four steps to creatively resolve a conflict.

After eating some colorful vegetable sushi, all learned how to make their own and why they call it sticky rice. Some even tried the super-hot wasabi.

Rice Paper Painting

Painting rice paper with flavored syrups was a hit. Even better - eating their tasty artwork.

CAPA High School and college students helped lead all the activities throughout this fun evening.
