June 26 2009 - NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS CONCERNING ADVERTISEMENTS FOR OBTAINING COPIES OF RECORDED DEEDS

Owners of properties for which property deeds have been recorded with the Department of Records have reported receiving advertisements via the mail offering to provide, for a fee, copies of their recorded deeds. These advertisements are addressed to the property owner and cite the recording number of the deed.  (Example Solicitation)

Please be advised that these services are not affiliated with nor underwritten by the Philadelphia Department of Records. If you receive such an offer, your name, address and document recording number have been obtained from public records by the company making the solicitation. Although this is legal, it is not necessary for an individual to use such services to obtain copies of recorded deeds or other documents. Note the disclaimer in this sample advertisement.

Copies can be obtained directly from the Records Department, Room 154, City Hall, Philadelphia. The Department's fee for copies of recorded documents is $2.00 per page. Certification of a copy is an additional $2.00.

Copies of recorded documents can also be obtained via the Department's online system, Philadox, at http://philadox.phila.gov/picris/splash.jsp.

Purchase of a subscription to the system is required; the minimum subscription available is one hour of search time for $15.00.
