Glen Foerd is the last of the 19th century riverfront estates in Philadelphia open to the public. This romantic estate situated on 18 acres of English Park gardens overlooking the Delaware River is one of Philadelphia’s best kept secrets. A few of the highlights of the 1850 Italianate mansion is an impressive art gallery with a Tiffany style skylight, and a subterranean billiard room known as the Rathskeller. First time visitors to Glen Foerd always experience the “wow factor” because of the stunning views of the Delaware River. Enjoy the estate’s beautiful rose garden, heritage trees, deer and dog statues and woodland garden well. Outbuildings include a boathouse with viewing platform, observation tower, carriage house, garden house, cottage and gatehouse.

Fairmount Park boasts many architectural treasures, seven of which are maintained as historic house museums open to the public. Located on the banks of the Schuylkill River, these homes originally served as the rural summer villas for well-to-do families during the eighteenth- and early-nineteenth century. They are considered among the most significant architectural examples of this time period in the United States. Their styles, furnishings, history and stories illustrate the culture and domestic lives of the time. The houses are administered by a variety of organizations and maintain different hours of operation, but all are generally open Thursday to Sunday from July to December. Group tours can be arranged. For hours of operation, ticketing information, and to learn the history of each house, please visit the Park Charms website. The site also includes maps and public transit and driving directions.
Horticulture Center The Horticulture Center, a modern exhibition hall and greenhouse, was built for the Bicentennial celebration in 1976. It sits on the site of the former Horticultural Hall, an 1876 Centennial Exposition building.
A trip to the Horticulture Center will be time well spent. Within its walls are a visitor center and greenhouse where one can see many tropical plants and a fine collection of statues interspersed in the greenery.
Outside you can see many types of flowers and trees, a small pond, a creek and a wetland. The Display Gardens contain perennials, herbs, an accessible garden, everlastings, a demonstration garden and a vegetable garden. Other sites to explore include perennial Gardens, a butterfly garden and the Puryear Pavilion in the trees. A Japanese maple collection, a pinetum (collection of evergreen trees of all genus), and the 20+ acre Centennial Arboretum (dating back to 1876 and containing majestic trees of Asian, European and North American origin) can all be enjoyed.
Coursing throughout the grounds are nature trails dotted by a couple of picnic groves and sculptures of poets and musicians. Take a stroll by the tranquil reflecting pool. Gaze upon Gambol I and II, two silver horses prancing in place along Belmont Avenue. Also located on the grounds is the Japanese House and Garden, which is a treat in and of itself.

Japanese House and Garden
Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia, from the 1876 Centennial Exposition to the installation of its contemporary paintings in 2007. Shofuso was built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials and exhibited in the courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was moved to Philadelphia in 1958, to the site of several previous Japanese structures dating to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. In 2007, internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Senju, inspired by our waterfall, donated 20 murals to Shofuso. The Friends of the Japanese House and Garden preserve and operate Shofuso. The Japanese House is open for visitation, group tours, and public programs from April to October. Shofuso hosts weddings, commitment ceremonies, vow renewals, private receptions and parties, and public and private tea ceremonies. The exquisite loveliness of this authentic Japanese house and garden with island, bridge and koi pond is Philadelphia's most beautiful and unique site for intimate events. Sculpture and Horticultural Garden and Cemetery
Before publicly owned parks became popular in the second half of the 19th century, people picnicked and relaxed in cemeteries. In Philadelphia, Laurel Hill Cemetery, built on the site of an estate overlooking the Schuylkill River, opened in 1836. Over time it has become a truly unique historical resource and garden. It is also one of few cemeteries in the United States to be honored with the designation of National Historic Landmark. The site offers 78 acres of art and history, including the burial of notable war heroes dating back to the Civil War.
