May, 2016

space
space

Dear Friends:

The past month was bursting with activity and excitement in anticipation of two seasons—budget season and the warm weather months.

First, Mayor Kenney and I toured recreation centers and playgrounds in several City Council districts, bringing awareness to our aging facilities and the need for more funding to repair them. Thank you to all of the staff and community members who welcomed us. This push to invest over $300 million in the infrastructure of our parks, recreation centers and libraries, known as Rebuild, is a continuous effort, and I look forward to testifying on the department’s behalf at our May 2 City Council hearing.

Second, staff has been preparing for major, annual departmental celebrations like the Broad Street Run, TreePhilly giveaways, 5K walks and runs, and Love Your Park Week, as well as the return of our large seasonal workforce. These are no small undertakings, and I am grateful for the hardworking employees pulling together all of the logistics.

You’ve likely seen mention of the Philadelphia International Unity Cup in the media over the past few weeks. The selection of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, along with the City’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, to lead this World Cup-style soccer tournament is yet another recognition by Mayor Kenney of this department’s expertise in programming, promotions, and community outreach for large-scale events. Details of the Fall 2016 tournament are included later in this newsletter, but please feel free to reach out to Bill Salvatore directly (bill.salvatore@phila.gov or 215-683-3685) if you would like to get involved.

Finally, please remember to invite me to your upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you out and about soon!

Kathryn Ott Lovell

Manayunk Bridge Trail Lighting

space
space

On March 24, the City of Philadelphia announced the receipt of federal funding for five community-based transportation projects through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which targets pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements. Securing $2.67M of federal Transportation Alternative Program funds, matched by over $500,000 of local funds, was the result of a coordinated effort between the City’s Department of Streets, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Office of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems, as well as the Philadelphia City Planning Commission

.

The project under the supervision of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation will add lighting to the recently opened Manayunk Bridge Trail, which connects the Schuylkill River Trail, Manayunk Canal Towpath, and Main Street in Manayunk to the Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Montgomery County. Upon completion, the Manayunk Bridge Trail hours will be extended, allowing the Bridge Trail to serve as a critical commuter connection for pedestrians and cyclists who travel between Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties.

Improvements at Markward Playground

space
space Markward Playground space
space

On April 14, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell, State Representative Brian Sims and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson announced approximately $1million in investments at Markward Playground at Schuylkill River Park. The funding is derived from three separate sources-- Parks & Recreation was awarded $388,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) as part of the Recreation and Conservation fund; Councilman Kenyatta Johnson matched the DCNR award with a $300,000 investment; and Parks & Recreation will invest an additional $300,000 into the rehabilitation.

The Markward rehabilitation and development project will include demolition and site improvements to the heavily used Center City location. In order to continue to meet the needs of the community and to bring the park into compliance with current standards, including ADA, safety and the Universal Construction Code, the park is being upgraded. The project will also improve stormwater management features by constructing a rain garden, and existing landscaping will be upgraded.

Plants Make Positive Places (P3) is expanding in 2016 to increase the amount of plants propagated, the number of gardens installed, and the amount of staff trained on the tending and continued maintenance of gardens on Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) landscapes.

Established in 2015, the P3 project is working to increase plant propagation, reuse and distribution within the PPR system to expand plants’ positive aesthetic, educational, and ecological impact. After receiving funding from the Mayor’s Fund for Innovation in 2015, PPR staff developed a pilot project that included a propagation system at Greenland Nursery for in-house growing of landscape perennial plants and the use of the planting material to install four gardens at recreation facilities, as well as the training of on-site staff on the care and continued maintenance of these gardens.
